The National Dance Awards, presented by the Critics Circle will this year be organised by the fabulous Graham Watts, a truly dedicated dance critic who has seen more dance that I can possibly imagine and never lost his passion for it. It will be hosted at The Place on Monday and I am looking forward to seeing some great dancers, choreographers and companies honoured. I sometimes find the Awards a bit ballet heavy, so it will be interesting to see how it develops over the next few years to be more inclusive of all the styles out there.

Also the Whats On Stage Awards are coming up with some great choreographers up for Best Choreograpaher Best Choreographer including Kate Prince for Some Like It Hip Hop and Stephen Mear for Crazy for You - click here to get voting!

After working through my seriously packed inbox, I went straight to the website londondance.com to check out the latest news in the dance world. It is a really good site for keeping up to date with upcoming performances and topical news stories. They also collate articles about dance that have been in the press and I love the strange things that pop up. This article in The Guardian caught my eye, chronicling the best 'unexpected' dance sequences in films complete with clips:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2011/aug/10/clip-joint-unexpected-dancing

Now I need to buckle down to the job of creating the programme for MOVE IT 2012. I am delighted to say that we are now open for applications for the programme, and anyone can apply to perform, teach or take part in a number of other ways. Click here to fill in the simple online form and let us know your ideas.

We have so many plans....can't wait to get started.

Its tricky to translate dance into a still image but when it works it really is brilliant. Popular dance photographer Chris Nash can do just that - there is an exhibition of his work at the V&A at the moment >>>

I love this dance photography - more because it makes me think of every day people dancing whenever they feel like it, as though everyone has a dancer inside of them. The photographs are by New York photographer Jordan Matters and the full range can be seen here >>>

I am an avid follower of the blog 'dancers are the athletes of god'. It has some really fantastic images and captures dancers strength.

I do like the way the show brings dance on to TV and reinforces the amount of training and technique each dance style requires. Aside from seeing the dancers develop, I love to see what the choreographers are doing and the pieces they create. Watching along with the judges, its fair to say I don't always agree! I've been reading Graham Watts detailed reviews which breakdown each routine and often seem to give a much truer critique - reviews are posted on www.ballet.co.uk - take a look here >>>

Billy Elliot will be hunting for the next Billy Elliot at MOVE IT 2011! There are auditions for playing both young and older Billy and full details about found here >>>

The internet is a useful way to hear about castings and auditions these days and there are a few sites that are invaluable to dancers looking for work. Here are my picks. . .

- Dancers Pro
Like it's sister site Casting Call Pro for actors, users can create their own profile and view posted jobs. One benefit is the way you can make your profile visible in google so it's like having your own mini webpage to promote yourself. Find out more at www.uk.dancerspro.com

- The Stage Online
While budding performers would trawl the backpages of The Stage newspaper they can now find alot of the jobs pages online. Useful as lists jobs for all types of performers, not just dance. Check it out here: www.thestage.co.uk/recruitment

- Spotlight
The Spotlight directories have long been known as a good place to start when looking for talent. While their website is useful for sourcing the latest auditions, it is also jam packed with careers advice. www.spotlight.com

- Dance Cast
Relatively new is Dance Cast - its been running on facebook for the last 3 years and its soon to launch its own independant website. Run by a dancer, not only does Dance Cast post out castings for paid work, coming from a dancer's understanding it also offers access to information on legal rights for self employed performers, lists of agents, workshops, master classes and events, even accommodation for dancers! For now follow Dance Cast on Facebook Group and look out for the new website:
www.dancecastuk.com

 Comments

Busy, busy, busy

With the show just a few weeks away the team is buzzing with activity as things come together. Excitingly, we are firming up a fantastic audition that will take place during MOVE IT to be announced soon - keep checking the website for the latest news!

For many years waacking has lurked out of the limelight of the UK scene. Often lumped in with other funk styles or confused with vogueing, the style is roundly misunderstood and often misspelt! However in the last year and a half, waacking has experienced not so much a rebirth but more an explosion!

Over in the USA, the style is more popular and I stumbled across this fun video on youtube of a Waacking Battle in New York:

Waacking orginates from the underground disco and gay clubs of the 70s, pioneered by the freestylers party-goers of the time, it is primarily a freestyle dance inspired by the music. The freedom it allows the dancer is perhaps why, in an age of slick choreography and dancers dressed in matching costumes, individuals feel attracted to and liberated by waacking and why it has gained such popularity so quickly.

As the style grows here in the UK - groups like The Waacktitioners are coming through and it seems now is the perfect time to venture out of the dance studio, head for the club and release the inner funky disco freestyler!

 Comments

Black Swan. . .

So I finally got to see Black Swan! Living up to the reviews, right from the beginnning it was intense, as the tale of a ballerina struggling with her sanity unfolded I was on the edge of my seat. It is scary with lots of jumpy moments and a fair bit of gore - I was hiding behind my fingers at times!

As for the dancing with the use of clever cut away and partial shots I felt that you only glimpsed the ballet style and allowed them to focus less and use an actress rather than a professional dancer for the lead role. However what this meant was the real beauty of the dancer's movements seemed lost and the althletic force behind ballet was less apparent.

Nevertheless the film on all sorts of levels is unforgettable and recommendable to anyone, not just those with an interest in dance.

For dancing fans see what the British ballet stars thought of the film's use of ballet, just click here.

As I arrived the auditions were in full swing and the room was packed with hopefuls all practicing their dance moves and rehearsing the script. Then each individual went into the audition room for their moment in front of the directors and casting team, including Julie Harkin (Casting Director for Misfits) and Director Tom Harper (Misfits, This is England).

Many of the candidates were dancers and actors, some had cheerleading experience and all came ready to impress. There was a variety of outfits, from sporty tracksuits and cheerleading inspired short skirts to balletic leotards and leggings. Doing my best X-Factor presenter impression (just call me Holly Willoughby), I had the task of interviewing candidates before and after their auditions. I wandered around the waiting room filming hopefuls rehearsing and finding out about their experiences. Each had their own style and some signature moves to match. I saw everything from a backflip off the wall, waacking and even Australian dance move the Melbourne shuffle!

There was no doubt the room was bursting with talent, the casting team certainly have the tough task of selecting for recalls. To see who made the final cut we will just have to wait for the film’s release in late 2011, fingers crossed my footage makes it into the extras!

 Comments

Rock Out

There are so many dance classes happening all over the UK – for here in London I find londondance.com is good for finding classes, particularly if you’re looking for classes that take place all over London.

Keen to try something different I headed for an Inko Dancers class at Pineapple in Covent Garden. Their approach sets Contemporary dance to the thrashing sounds of Indie and Rock music. Joining the packed class, a mix of regulars and some first tries; I spotted that Contemporary Rock isn’t just about the dance. There was a sense of style, the usual dance gear had an edge with extra eyeliner, loose hair and even the odd rock band t-shirt. Warm up over, the pace was quick keeping the class on their toes as we dipped and dived to MGMT. The routine felt fluid and quite lyrical; this blended with the pulsing tones of the track to feel strong and dramatic. By the end of the class we were all throwing ourselves in to the moves and channeling the bold attitude that the Inko Dancers are known for.

The company are popping up all over at the moment; catch them on the Louie Spence tv programme – 'Showbusiness' currently running weekly on Wednesdays at 9pm. The crew are following the company’s directors as they hold auditions for new dancers. When they are not touring performing at festivals like Glastonbury, they hold regular classes at Pineapple. The company will also be performing a new piece and teaching a few classes at MOVE IT 2011; offering the chance to channel your own inner rock star.

Get a feel of what they do with this video. . .

The real fun is seeing how people make a trend their own and gathering inspiration from that.

For all the dancers out there, fashion is intregal to the style, whether on or off stage outfits need to make a statement. Blog, dancerstyle blends the world of dance and fashion seamlessly and is packed full of inspiration. I love the images from the Lindy Hop event, like Mike and Marion in picture below. Dances like Lindy Hop has a real sense of style that goes along with it.

There is lots of ballet commentary on the web with some really exciting behind the scenes news on the ballet world. Here are my picks for favourite ballet blogs, if you’re clued up on the web you can receive RSS updates in to your inbox or follow them on facebook.

Ballet News
Ballet News is great for keeping up with the International scene and I love their ‘cupcakes and conversations’ section. They regularly interview Ballet dancers from all over the world offering a fantastic insight in to life in a professional company. The latest one is with Sylvia Deaton, Corps de Ballet, Boston Ballet, check it out here.

The Ballet Bag
The Ballet Bag is packed full of useful knowledge about the style. Catering for all levels, there’s a section for the ‘Ballet Newbie’ and ‘Bag of Steps’ which gives you a description of ballet terms. The Ballet Bag bloggers will be joining us on the Big Dance Interviews Sofa and presenting the series, Ballet Rocks at MOVE IT, a great chance to hear whats out there on the internet for ballet fans.

www.theballetbag.com

I also came across an article on the Guardian website on what leading ballerinas thought of Black Swan. It offers an interesting insight in to the world of the dancer versus the world created in the film. To view the article click here

Chase The Dream was jam packed with movie inspired themes and everything from Madonna to Michael Jackson, they even managed to squeeze in a little audience participation with some ultra slick white gloves. Having been blown away by the Flawless boys talents, I really look forward to catching them at MOVE IT 2011.

As Programme Manager I'll be filling this blog with news and insider gossip on the dance world and especially MOVE IT.

Since I am off to see Flawless perform at the Southbank Centre this evening, I'm getting in the mood by glancing through pics from their performance at last year's show, too good.
